Route 66 On-The-Air Special Event (September 11-19)

This year's Route 66 On-The-Air event runs from September 11 through 19. Route 66 stretches from Illinois to California and radio groups from all the states along the route participate. Once again, our club will operate with the special event call sign W6D. This year, Bruce Hunter, KI6RUW, is coordinating the event for the club.

Participation is easy. All Hams are invited to help. You operate out of your home using the special event call (Please ID yourself with your own call occasionally). People are trying to contact as many of the participating groups as they can, so you are the hunted. There are recommended frequencies in QST and we'll add some here as we approach the event. You do have to keep a log of your contacts, in Zulu time. You do NOT have to do any QSL cards; the club handles any requests that come to the club mailbox.

We need to have operators on the air every day of the event. On weekends it's harder to get out through all the traffic; there are usually other special events going on the weekends, too. The participating clubs in the central part of the country get more contacts than we do out here in the far west, but we need to be on the air to represent our stretch of Route 66.

If you have any questions or wish to volunteer to help, you can contact Bruce at bhunter3@mindspring.com

JOTA - Jamboree on the Air (October 16-17)

Jamboree on the Air - JOTA - is a worldwide radio event that encourages Scouts and other youth groups to participate in radio-related activities and to get on the air with the help of licensed amateurs.

Supported by the ARRL, VVARC is sponsoring a local event again this year, to be held at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds on October 16 and 17.

JOTA has become one of the club's premier events, and we are expecting a large turnout of scouts this year. We are looking for volunteers to help with registration, operate "get on the air" stations, and run the various events that we're offering. No special expertise is required - the events are all planned and set up in advance, but we need the bodies to run them. We are also looking for a few radio operators who would be willing to monitor the event frequencies in case propagation is poor and we need some guaranteed contacts for the scouts. It's a great, fun event, and a rewarding experience to share our interest in radio with young people from our community.

If you have any questions, wish to register your group, or volunteer to help, contact Dave Deards at RadioGramp@me.com

See the article on JOTA on our Community page, and download an informational flyer and registration form here.

ELMERS

An Elmer is kind of like a mentor for amateur radio operators. As new operators, we need the experience, knowledge, and guidance passed on to us by those that have been practicing for some time.
Thank you to those members that have stepped forward and volunteered to help members with questions. Feel free to contact anyone on our ELMER list when you have questions.
